Victoria’s Secret has cast 22-year-old Brazilian actress and model, Valentina Sampaio as the first openly transgender model for their company. She will be featured in the new Pink campaign set to be released next month.
Before the news came out, Sampaio posted a backstage photo on Instagram on Thursday tagging Victoria’s Secret’s account and using the hashtags #vspink, #campaign and #diversity.
Sampaio’s agent, Erio Zanon, confirmed to CNN on Monday that Sampaio has been hired to be in the PINK line that will be released in August.
Last year, Victoria’s Secret chief marketing officer, Ed Razek, made derogatory comments about transgender and plus-size models. CNN wrote “When he was asked about including transgender models he said, ‘I don’t think we should…the show is a fantasy.’ He later apologized and said they would cast a transgender model.”
Improvements on the $7 billion dollar lingerie business are being made with showing true diversity and the idea that “sex sells,” according to CBS News.
Sampaio is very excited to be apart of the Victoria’s Secret family and being apart of breaking barriers to represent “more inclusivity and representation for everybody,” stated Zanon.
