Tidal held one of the most epic events at the Apollo Theater in Harlem New York yesterday evening, May 22, 2019. The night, which featured a live Q&A with American journalist Elliot Wilson and record producer, DJ Khaled was filled with necessary conversations, a lot of advice giving, and uncontrollable laughter.
In partnership with #CRWN, Khaled premiered an exclusive documentary, followed by an open dialogue that seemed to open a can of worms. Throughout the night, Khaled spoke on always protecting his energy and even encouraged the youth to save their money in hopes of buying their own apartments and houses one day.
RELEASING AN ALBUM IN 2019 + TOURING WITH BEYONCÉ & JAY Z
Wilson to Khaled – Why didn’t you release an album in 2018?
In response, Khaled revealed that the plan was to release a project. However, at the time he had other obligations, such as, touring with Demi Lavato and Beyoncé & Jay Z, for part II of ‘On the Run’ to attend to.
I didn’t want to rush the album
COLLABORATING WITH CARDI B
The ‘Father of Asahd’ also sheds some light on what it was like collaborating with Cardi B. He explained always being a fan of her work from a distance. When the time finally came, he reached out to Brooklyn Johnny, who made sure he got the record to her. Once that connection happened, it took her about a year to cut the record, but it was obviously worth it.
“I got the hottest Cardi B & 21 savage Verse to Date”
THE RELATIONSHIP KHALED SHARED WITH BUJU BANTON
Khaled speaks so highly of his album. He discusses his love for Jamaica and connecting with Buju Banton. Did you know that Khaled has been going to Jamaica, since the age of thirteen? He reminisced about flying back and forth, balancing his radio show, and finally solidifying the relationship with him. From creating dubsteps in the olden days, to going on tour, and now “my family is his family.”
“My album is God sent”
When it was time to speak about Asahd, the crowd learns that he was actually born in New York City. “While I was in my sprinter, I had this feeling that I’m about to have my first child. It really hit me. My his life was going to change and I had 5 minutes to figure out life.” He called Buju, who prayed for him. Before the arrival of his son, an Arabic prayer was also prepared.
THE MARATHON CONTINUES WITH NIPSEY HUSSLE
When the time arrived to speak on Nipsey, emotions began to rush, like the rest of the room. “When I brought the record to Nipsey, he told me not to play the hook.” Khaled was very shocked at that. He was confused how someone can tell a story, without hearing the hook. Without a doubt, Nip brought the heat and still made it make sense.
He was just telling the story, like a movie
During their conversations, Hussle kept telling Khaled, that the record just a demo, Khaled quickly disagreed and said “no, this is it.” After learning about his passing, “I wasn’t even thinking about the record.” When it came time to perform the song on SNL, it was comforting for him. Especially paying respect to a legend.
