Congratulations are certainly in order for actress, writer and now producer Issa Rae, who will be starring and producing the latest version of the 1996 thriller “Set It Off.”
Written by Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster, the film tells the story of Frankie, a female worker who gets fired as a bank teller and immediately begins working as a janitor friends Tisean, Cleo, and Stony. After struggling with finances for some time, Frankie’s friends resort to robbing banks to make up for lost time. At first they’re successful, until they start attracting the attention of an obsessive detective trying to ruin their streak.
During release of the original film, it was rare to see action thriller’s featuring female leads. And more specifically, women of color. The film scores a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, further proving how impactful the movie was!
Earlier in 2016, Rae co-created HBO’s “Insecure” in which she took on multiple roles including writer, executive producer and actress. Earlier this year, she also starred in the comedy film “Little” alongside Regina Hall and Marsai Martin.
The new film has yet to announce the release date, but we are excited to see which direction Rae is taking this film.
